Hinsdale Orthopaedics Surgeon to Receive Prestigious Lou Lamoriello Hockey Award

Hinsdale, IL - January 17 — Dr. Michael Collins of Hinsdale Orthopaedics has been named the 2011 recipient of the prestigious Lou Lamoriello Award, named to honor former Providence College player, coach and administrator. The American Hockey Coaches Association (AHCA) chose the Notre Dame hockey alum to receive the award, which will be presented on January 28, 2011 before the Notre Dame – Miami University ice hockey game scheduled at 7:35 p.m. This award recognizes former college coaches or hockey players with distinguished careers in or out of the game of hockey.

During his time as a varsity player for the Fighting Irish (1968-1970), Notre Dame ice hockey became a NCAA Division I sport and the team compiled a 37-16-4 record. Former Notre Dame hockey coach Lefty Smith described how Dr. Collins is deserving of this award by saying, “I have always been extremely impressed with Mike Collins and his accomplishments throughout his career. He was at Notre Dame when I arrived in 1968 and played two seasons for us when we were starting the program. His drive and work ethic were always what stood out to me and played a major role in his successful career. He’s an outstanding orthopaedic surgeon; he’s written two books and he and his wife have raised a wonderful family with 12 kids. Mike has lived an absolutely amazing life. That’s why I thought he was so deserving of the Lou Lamoriello Award.”
