Hinsdale Orthopaedics teams travel to Haiti to continue relief efforts
June 21, Hinsdale, IL - The earthquake that struck January 12, 2010 and claimed the lives of 25,000 continues to greatly affect the people of Haiti. Expert surgeons are still needed to treat the critically injured.
Hinsdale Orthopaedics responded to this crisis in March by sending experienced Trauma Surgeon Dr. Steven Louis, Physician Assistant Katelyn O'Connell and Clinical and Surgical Assistant Ann Whirl to Port-au-Prince, Haiti. They were part of a 22-member trauma surgery team treating patients at St. Francois de Sales Hospital. Dr. Louis returned to St. Francois de Sales in the capital city of Haiti on June 12. He was accompanied by Dr. Kenneth Schiffman, an Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in the Upper Extremities. Dr. Robyn Vargo, an Osteopathic physician, joined Ann Whirl for her second trip to St. Francois de Sales on June 18. Their team was the last full team sent to this location by Catholic Relief Services and the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center.
