Hinsdale Orthopaedics team travels to Haiti to assist in relief effort

March 4, Hinsdale, IL -The country of Haiti was ravaged by its most destructive natural disaster of all time on January 12, 2010. The earthquake left over 200,000 people dead and over 1,000,000 people homeless. An estimated 300,000 survivors were injured, suffering from relentless infection and "crush injuries" such as broken bones, exposed skulls, fractures and open wounds. Consequently, there is an overwhelming need for trauma surgeons to treat the critically injured.

Hinsdale Orthopaedics is responding to this crisis by sending Dr. Steven Louis, an expert Orthopaedic Surgeon specializing in Trauma. Accompanying Dr. Louis on this humanitarian mission are Katelyn O'Connell, a board certified Physician Assistant, and Ann Whirl, a Clinical and Surgical Assistant. They will be part of a 22-member trauma surgery team that will work around-the-clock and triple the number of surgeries taking place at St. Francois de Sales Hospital in the capital city of Port-au-Prince. The team is a product of a joint initiative of Catholic Relief Services (CRS) and the University of Maryland.

In addition to helping the victims of Haiti's earthquake by sending a team to the disaster area, we are collecting gently used orthopaedic supplies to ship there, including crutches, braces, canes, slings, splints and walker boots.
