Gluteus Medius Tears
The gluteus medius muscle is the main stabilizer of the pelvis and controls the level of the hips. If the gluteus medius muscle is not performing its job properly, it can cause instability. When there is weakness in the gluteus medius, the pelvis may dip downward during the swing phase of walking, when the leg reaches forward to take a step. This results in an abnormal gait and increased degrees of knee flexion in order to clear the ground. Tears in the Gluteus medius shorten and weaken the muscle and are thought to be attritional injuries, meaning they increase with age. Symptoms may include pain in the buttocks, lateral hip and groin.
