Loose Bodies
Loose bodies are fragments of articular cartilage, which is the layer of material that covers and cushions the surface of the ball and socket of the hip joint.Loose bodies are often the result of trauma, such as a fall, an automobile accident, a sports-related injury or a degenerative disease that causes fragments to become trapped or break free and enter the joint, causing pain and a catching sensation. They are relatively easy to detect with modern x-ray techniques. Once diagnosed, the removal of loose bodies through hip arthroscopy usually results in a significant reduction in hip symptoms.
